My daughter inspires me

Friday, September 26th, 2008

My daughter, Morgan, spent almost a month in Uganda this summer, volunteering in an orphanage, a teen center and an AIDs clinic.  A life changing experience for sure.  She made this video to share.

How do they say “grandma” in Africa? Might as well start getting used to it now.

In Swahili, it’s Bibi (I like it).  Not that they speak Swahili everywhere in Africa, I know, just easier to look up translations on-line.

Couldn’t have said it better …

Dullard Mush wonders why the Republicans just send out an Absentee Ballot pitch that relies on an issue that Republicans don’t agree on.

In fact, at least half of Nevada Republicans consider themselves pro-choice.  And many who don’t still believe abortion should be legal, even if they would like to see far fewer abortions done.

Now maybe I can finally up my domestic skills … “It’s a date!”

A voting block I can identify with!

Time magazine has christened this election’s key voting block “Maxed Out Moms.“  I can so relate!

Say something!

The Bush administration would like to put in new regulations that basically say: doctors, nurses and anyone else involved in your medical has the right not to give you information or treatments they find objectionable.  And they can’t be fired for it.
Women's health matters!

Horrifying!  #1 - I’ve had doctors and nurses give me all of my medical options (and then found out later they were opposed to some of them).  But they were PROFESSIONALS … they acted as medical experts and worked with me to help me make the best choices for me.  Imagine the impact to the doctor / patient relationship … you don’t know if they approve of your choices, you’re not sure if you can be open with them, and you don’t know if you’re getting all your options.

#2 -  We’re a nation of laws.  We have existing laws that protect religious freedom (The first amendment) and protect doctors who do not wish to perform abortions (Weldon and Church amendments).  Our political and legal system are designed to balance competing rights and responsibilities.  As my mother used to say, “your right to swing your arm stops at my nose.”  These regulations are completely one sided … they are more concerned with protecting “an employee whose task it is to clean the instruments” than with protecting you, the patient.  Feeling queasy yet?

#3 - Totally one sided.  Why aren’t employees and volunteers with pro-choice views protected?
